How to choose a sunscreen

Choosing the Right Sunscreen: Reading Labels

Being outdoors and enjoying great weather are what Spring and Summer are all about in Tennessee!  Keep your child sun safe with these tips for reading sunscreen labels and choosing the right product for your child. Consult your child's healthcare provider for more information.

  • "Broad Spectrum"- This means the product protects against UVA and UVB rays. We need to protect children from both types of UV light.
  • "Mineral Based"- Sunscreens labeled as mineral based contain Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide. Both provide a physical barrier to the sun's rays.  Mineral based sunscreen BLOCKS the UV light. This type of sun screen is great for sensitive skin.
  • "Chemical Based"- Products containing  oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate ABSORB harmful UV light before it causes damage to the skin. These products are light weight and do not leave a white film on the skin.
  • "SPF"- Sun Protection Factor indicates the level of sunburn protection provided from UVB light. An SPF between 30-50 is generally recommended for children.
  • "Water Resistant"- This means the sunscreen is effective in the water for approximately 40 minutes before the need to reapply.

Best Practices for Sunscreen:

  • Apply 15-20 minutes before sun exposure
  • Reapply AT LEAST every 2 hours. You may need to reapply more often if exposed to water and sweat.
  • Wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses
  • Reduce sun exposure by seeking shade
